State Route 432, located in the Longview/Kelso/Rainer Urban area is approximately 10.3 miles in length and provides a variety of vital transportation functions. This route serves as a major industrial transportation corridor, connecting the Port of Longview, the city of Longview and city of Kelso industrial areas to major markets via Interstate 5.

Why is WSDOT Studying the State Route 432 Longview Industrial Corridor?
A Route Development Plan (RDP) on SR 432 was completed in 2001. The RDP was completed by the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Council of Governments (CWCOG), the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Longview-Kelso Urban Area, and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The plan identified a series of improvements over 20 years to enhance the overall transportation system in the area.

WSDOT completed a technical report and preliminary feasibility analysis for realignment and improvements to the highway and rail facilities in the SR 432 Longview Industrial Corridor.

The End Result
The technical report and preliminary feasibility analysis developed recommendations to improve rail and freight movement throughout the SR 432 Longview Industrial Corridor. The study also reviewed the feasibility of constructing a limited access bypass highway to reduce future rail/truck conflict in the corridor.

Project Benefits
The feasibility analysis:

  • Identified specific improvements to highway and rail facilities in the corridor.
  • Assessed the viability of a new roadway and rail alignment to better serve the SR 432 corridor.
  • Recommended an implementation strategy identifying potential funding sources, project timeline and improvement phases, and the projected improvements cost.

What is the project timeline?
The study has been completed and the report published in 2009.

Financial Information
A State appropriation was provided to study the feasibility of a highway and rail realignment project in the Longview Industrial Area (SR 432) corridor, specifically, whether a limited access bypass highway is a feasible solution to reduce future rail/truck conflicts.
